Man City playmaker Silva fit for Manchester derby

Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini has been given some good news ahead of Sunday’s Manchester derby as it was confirmed that David Silva will be fit to play Premier League leaders Manchester United, according to the Daily Mirror.

It had been feared that Silva could be missing for weeks as specialists attempted to discover the cause of his hamstring injury, with the problem believed to be rooted in the Spain international’s back. But Silva is said to have reacted well to treatment this week and is ready to play against Sir Alex Ferguson’s side.

The Manchester derby is not only for bragging rights in the city, the Mirror adds, but offers Mancini the chance to draw level on points with Ferguson and leapfrog United on goal difference, the same measure by which City won the league outright last season.

Having presided over a winless run in the Champions League that has seen City exit European football altogether before Christmas, victory at the Etihad Stadium would ease the pressure on Mancini, the newspaper notes.

City went unbeaten in the league against United last season, including a 6-1 rout at Old Trafford and later a slender 1-0 win at Eastlands, the result that drew City level on points with United with only a matter of weeks remaining in the season.
