Vertonghen chose Tottenham over Arsenal due to Wenger's midfield plan

Jan Vertonghen has revealed that the reason he chose to move to Tottenham Hotspur rather than Arsenal was because Arsene Wenger intended to play him in midfield, rather than his preferred centre-back position, according to the Daily Mail.

Vertonghen left Ajax over the summer and was in demand from a number of Premier League teams, with the North London pair leading the chase for the Belgium international. And while Vertonghen has recently been playing away from the centre of defence at left-back - to cover for the injured Benoit Assou-Ekotto - he told a Dutch website that Wenger planned to play him even further from his best role.

Arsenal's interest was concrete, but they wanted me to be a controller in the midfield, an Emmanuel Petit-type,” Vertonghen said. “I'm not afraid of competition, but the overall picture of Spurs appealed to me more.

Vertonghen added that he still considers himself to be a centre-back, claiming to lack the agility needed to deal with a tricky winger such as Liverpool’s Raheem Sterling, despite impressing many Tottenham supporters with his displays on the left of Andre Villas-Boas’ back four.
