Liverpool pondering next step after Blackpool reject offer for Ince

Brendan Rodgers is considering alternative transfer targets after seeing another proposed transfer break down, as Blackpool have rejected Liverpool’s offer for Thomas Ince while the Reds struggle to make headway in their pursuit of Chelsea’s Daniel Sturridge, the Daily Mirror has reported.

Liverpool are keen to bring Ince back to the club he left for £250,000 in 2011, and are understood to have offered around £4m, 16 times than the fee for which they allowed the winger to leave in the first place.

Blackpool manager Michael Appleton acknowledged that talks between the clubs had taken place, but described Liverpool’s opening bid as “way below” what the Tangerines feel would be an acceptable price for the 20-year-old.

Ince, the son of former Liverpool captain Paul Ince, has made 21 appearances for Blackpool this season, scoring 13 goals, and left Anfield having made only one substitute appearance in a League Cup tie against Northampton in 2010. The lower league team won the tie on penalties, with Ince a 106th minute replacement for Dani Pacheco.

Rodgers said: “If we can get talented young players, and talented young British players in here, then that will be fantastic for us. The negotiations are done by the people above me and we’ll conclude what we can as early as we can.
