I needed patience in early days at Tottenham, says Lloris

Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper Hugo Lloris has spoken about patience playing a big part in him finally securing his spot as Spurs’ first choice goalkeeper, Sky Sports has reported.

Hugo Lloris and Brad Friedel

Lloris joined from French side Lyon in the summer, but had to play second fiddle to Brad Friedel at the start of the Premier League season, primarily getting opportunities in the Europa League. However, he has since been Head Coach Andre Villas-Boas' regular first choice ‘keeper, starting the last seven games for Spurs, and keeping three clean sheets along the way.

It is an experience that Lloris says he has learned from. The France international said: “I had to be patient but I wanted to play and to claim the goalkeeper position as mine. But the manager makes his own decisions, even though it was not really what I expected.

But it is part of an experience. The important thing was to come out the other side feeling stronger.

Despite the concern from Lloris at the start of the season, he says he respects Villas-Boas, and knew he had to bide his time. “I did speak to him but what was said between us remains between the two of us unless he wants to speak about it. I am a player, and I know my place. The most important thing is that the situation has changed,” he added.

Lloris has another reason to look to the future with Spurs, as the London club were drawn against Lyon in the Europa League last night, meaning Lloris will face off against his previous employers. Spurs currently sit fourth in the Premier League, and face Stoke City at White Hart Lane on Saturday.
