Chelsea unable to put a date on Terry's return

John Terry faces an undetermined length of time on the sidelines after suffering further complications to his recovery from a knee injury, forcing Chelsea interim manager Rafael Benitez to look for an alternative in the January transfer window, the Daily Mirror has reported.

John Terry

Chelsea have already moved for Newcastle United striker Demba Ba - the Senegal international is expected to be confirmed as a Blues player on Friday - but with Victor Moses and John Obi Mikel set to miss much of the next few weeks on international duty at the Africa Cup of Nations and Petr Cech joining Terry on the injured list, Benitez is facing a mini selection crisis and is in the market for reinforcements, the newspaper claims.

Cech suffered a groin injury against Everton and will be absent for a few weeks, depriving Benitez of another senior player at a time when the length of Terry’s lay-off cannot be confirmed, the manager has admitted.

Benitez said: “I talked with John on Wednesday morning and he is getting there and can start to do the warm-up with the team soon and then we will see how he will progress. Talking to the doctor, the problem is a build-up of fluid on the bone. So at this stage we have no idea when he will be back.

Chelsea face Swansea City in the FA Cup this weekend as they begin the defence of the trophy they won last season. Benitez’s former side Liverpool were the beaten finalists, with goals from Ramires and Didier Drogba sending the trophy to Stamford Bridge.
