Suarez not guaranteed central role at Liverpool after Sturridge signing

Luis Suarez is not certain to continue as Liverpool’s central striker now the Anfield club has signed Daniel Sturridge from Chelsea, the Daily Mirror has reported.

Suarez has scored 18 goals for Liverpool already this season but manager Brendan Rodgers sanctioned the purchase of Sturridge from Chelsea for £12m, and has said that he intends to play the England international in what he believes is his most effective position, through the middle of the attack. With the manager sticking to his preferred 4-3-3 formation, that would mean a change in role for Suarez.

Daniel’s best position is as a central striker, and I think the best role for him will be straight through the middle, with his pace,” Rodgers said. The manager then added that Suarez will be deployed elsewhere, with the Uruguayan expected to continue to perform despite his varying role.

Rodgers continued: “There is not just one way to play 4-3-3. You can have one up and two wingers, a floating nine like Luis. Or you can have one like Daniel playing central, two in and around him narrow, with the full-backs bombing on.

Suarez scored his 17th and 18th goals of the season in the 3-0 win over Sunderland earlier this week, surpassing the mark of 17 he set in the last campaign with only half of the current season played. After recording three wins from four games over the festive and New Year period, Liverpool are seven points adrift of the Premier League’s top four.
