Transfer market harder now for Arsenal, claims Wenger

Arsene Wenger has claimed that increased competition in the transfer market has made it more difficult for Arsenal to turn up talented young players for bargain fees, the Daily Mail has reported.

Arsene Wenger

In his early days with the Gunners, Wenger, who took charge at the club in 1996, made a habit of signing hitherto unknown players for low prices and turning them into among the Premier League’s most impressive players. The likes of Patrick Vieira, Emmanuel Petit, Nicolas Anelka, Kolo Toure and Freddie Ljungberg all arrived at the club in such a way.

Wenger has however revealed his belief that the increased presence of rival clubs in the same market is part of the reason why his transfer strategy has changed. The manager added that the different expectations of fans has played a part, too, with some supporters only interested in the club signing big name players.

Wenger said: “People want to see the next Lionel Messi - they don’t want to see a promising guy. The name of the player gives people hope, but when they haven’t heard of them people are already sceptical.

He added: “It’s much more difficult for us now. The competition is higher. We are trying to diversify a bit more because we are limited in England.
