Sir Alex Ferguson has revealed that Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney faces another two weeks out injured, ESPN has reported.

Wayne Rooney

Rooney picked up a knee injury during training on Christmas Day and while the problem is not understood to be of a serious nature, it is taking longer than expected to clear up. It was originally hoped that Rooney would be available to play against West Ham United in this weekend’s FA Cup tie, but Ferguson has said Rooney will not be available against the Hammers.

The manager added that Rooney stands to also miss the upcoming match against Liverpool at Old Trafford next weekend due to the injury. Ferguson said: “It's not serious but it's going to take longer than we thought. It's probably going to be another two weeks. He won't be fit for Liverpool.

In Rooney’s absence United were victorious in all of their post-Christmas fixtures, beating Newcastle United 4-3 on Boxing Day, West Bromwich Albion 2-0 a few days later, and Wigan Athletic 4-0 on New Year’s Day. Robin van Persie scored in all three fixtures, including a brace against the Latics, while Javier Hernandez also netted twice against Wigan and was also on target against Newcastle.
