Allardyce admits interest in Arsenal striker Chamakh

West Ham manager Sam Allardyce has confirmed an interest in out-of-favour Arsenal striker, Marouane Chamakh, ESPN has reported.

Marouane Chamakh

Chamakh, who transferred from Monaco in the summer of 2010, has struggled with life at Arsenal, failing to hold down a regular starting position in the two full seasons he's had with the Gunners. And Allardyce believes the Moroccan international could help alleviate his striker shortage.

"We have made an inquiry and that is all we have done at the moment. There's a possibility that a deal can be done, we are looking at it, yes, as well as a number of others."

Chamakh scored 18 goals in his debut season for the club in the 2010/11 season from 41 games, but struggled with form in the 2011/12 season, scoring just a solitary goal all season, and only starting one Premier League game. This season has seen that figure drop to zero, with appearances being limited to League Cup games and a solitary Champions League performance.

West Ham currently sit mid-table and will be looking to secure Premier League status with a solid 2nd half to the season. However, West Ham have only 3 recognised strikers in their squad currently in Cartlon Cole, Mobido Maiga and Andy Carroll, who's on loan from Liverpool. With Carroll currently injured and Maiga heading off for the African Cup of Nations, the goal-scoring onus is being put on Cole, who has notched just 2 goals this season.
