Southampton interested in Cagliari defender claims agent

Southampton are reportedly targeting Davide Astori as a transfer recruit, according to his agent, Sky Sports has reported.

Davide Astori

Astori, currently with Serie A side Cagliari, is a 25-year-old defender who's been capped by the Italian national team. He's played 15 games for Cagliari this season, which has seen the Sardinian club struggle at the foot of the table where they are currently just one point outside the relegation zone.

However, Astori has impressed and is attracting attention elsewhere, including Southampton. His agent, Renzo Contratto, is quoted as saying: "There are many clubs interested in Astori and among them I know there is also Southampton."

"Both the player and Cagliari have said in the last days that, in the event that an important offer came, they will evaluate it together and decide what to do. This could happen in January."

Southampton are currently also struggling in the Premier League, with the newly promoted club currently sitting in 17th, only outside the relegation zone on goal difference, albeit with a game in hand on most of the surrounding teams. Manager Nigel Adkins is believed to be interested in Astori as he looks to shore up a defense and maintain his club's Premier League status.

Southampton have also been linked with Birmingham City goalkeeper Jack Butland recently, with his defence having kept only two clean sheets all season.
