Chelsea annoyed with Terry over Lampard tribute

Chelsea are said to be unhappy with comments made on social media by John Terry with regards to the future of Frank Lampard, the England midfielder expected to leave Stamford Bridge at the end of the season, the Guardian has reported.

Terry took to Instagram after reading quotes attributed to Lampard’s agent, Steve Kutner, that confirmed Lampard would be leaving the Premier League side when his contract expired in the summer. Terry posted a picture of him and Lampard together, said he was “devastated” by the news and that Chelsea should retire Lampard’s No. 8 shirt in his honour.

The quotes were later denied by Kutner, although the Guardian adds that the agent did not reject the meaning of them. The newspaper claims that Lampard will leave Chelsea on a Bosman transfer, with MLS side LA Galaxy his most likely destination.

Terry deleted his remarks and posted an explanation on the site, while interim manager Rafael Benitez said: “I didn't know [about Terry's comments]. I was surprised when they told me but that's it.” Benitez added that he expected Lampard to remain professional despite the club’s decision not to offer the midfielder a new contract.
