Parker set for first Tottenham start of the season in FA Cup tie

Scott Parker is in line to make his first start for Tottenham Hotspur since May 2012 when the Premier League side meet League One Coventry City in the FA Cup, the Daily Mirror has reported.

Parker has struggled with an Achilles injury picked up while on international duty with England at Euro 2012 and only returned to the fold for his club in early December 2012, making five substitute appearances so far this season. Parker had undergone surgery to correct the long-standing problem and has made a number of appearances for Spurs’ U-21 side in an effort to improve his fitness.

Tottenham’s assistant coach, former Germany and Spurs midfielder Steffen Freund, revealed that part of the reason Parker has so far been unable to earn a start in the Tottenham XI has been the form of midfield duo Sandro and Moussa Dembele, but one - or both - of the pair are likely to be rested against the Sky Blues.

Freund said: “Sandro and Moussa are doing a fantastic job for us - 10 points in the last four games - but I'm really proud about Scott Parker. To be patient is not easy, but that shows how strong we are, especially in central midfield. We have a lot of players - Tom Huddlestone, Jake Livermore, Tom Carroll. They are waiting to start too.
