Chelsea and Man Utd on alert over Modric

Luka Modric could be set to make a return to the Premier League, with Manchester United and Chelsea leading the way, reports the Mirror.

Modric, 27, left Tottenham to join Real Madrid in a £33m deal in the summer, but has struggled to hold down a first-team spot with the Spanish giants, starting eight La Liga matches, and scoring one goal.

The Croatia international recently admitted to his struggles settling in in Madrid: "This is Real Madrid. I understand there is great pressure for new signings to succeed here.

"I'm not making excuses, I am not that kind of person, but it is very challenging to adapt to life at a big club like Madrid."

Chelsea have long been admirers of Modric, with widely reported bids rejected from the London side prior to his move to Spain. If the midfielder was keen on a move away from the Bernabeu, Chelsea would get another opportunity to secure the deal.

Man Utd manager Sir Alex Ferguson has previously likened Modric to Paul Scholes, who is to retire in coming seasons: "They have the same qualities in terms of controlling the game and their passing consistency is good. One thing people often under-estimate with Modric is his stamina."

Modric previously spent four seasons with Tottenham in the Premier League, scoring 13 goals in 127 league appearances for the White Hart Lane club.
