Man City plan move for Derby winger

Sunday 06 January 2013

Manchester City are reportedly preparing to swoop for Derby County's Will Hughes, The Mirror has reported.

Will Hughes

Hughes, 17, made his debut for Derby County last season and has gone on to become a regular member of the Championship club's line-up, playing 27 games and scoring twice. Derby are currently sitting mid-table in the league, although they are only three points outside the playoff spots.

This may mean that they would be reluctant to let a key member of their squad leave without suitable compensation, which City are more than capable of meeting, with a free in the region of £7million being tagged on the winger.

Hughes has been attracting the attention from the likes of Arsenal, Tottenham and Fulham of recent, but City's recent inclusion in that list could create a bidding war. City are currently 2nd in the Premier League, 7 points behind leaders Manchester United, and with the Financial Fair Play rules coming in a homegrown contingents to comply with, signing a relatively cheap English player fits the mold.

Should a bid come in January, Derby County would hope that any team that signs Hughes would allow the player to stay at Pride Park on loan till the end of the season as they continue their push towards the playoff spots. City's wealth of attacking talents, which has made them the 2nd highest goal scorers in the Premier League, would certainly assist that issue.
