Arsenal linked with McCarthy move

Sunday 06 January 2013

Arsenal are reportedly lining up a number of January transfers, primarily Wigan's James McCarthy, The Mirror has reported.

James McCarthy

Wigan are currently trying to survive in yet another relegation battle, with McCarthy being a regular starter for the Latics. The 22-year-old, who can play in midfield and defence, has featured regularly for Roberto Martinez's side since making his debut back in 2009, and earned his first international cap with Ireland last season.

A fee of around £8million is currently being tied with McCarthy, who is currently out injured for two weeks with ankle ligament damage. Arsenal could face competition from the likes of Everton and Liverpool, but with Wigan looking likely to be embroiled in a relegation fight, they may be keen to hold on to a key member of their midfield setup. McCarthy has featured 21 times for Wigan this season, scoring two goals.

The Gunners are also reportedly preparing for talks with Athletico Madrid and Barcelona for Adrian Lopez and David Villa respectively. Arsenal have struggled to replace Robin Van Persie, who was sold to Manchester United in the summer, and with Marouane Chamakh now at West Ham and contract talks with Theo Walcott still not resolved, a bid for a new striker appears likely.
