Tottenham could sign Holtby in January

Tottenham Hotspur could complete the signing of Schalke midfielder Lewis Holtby in January if the two sides can agree a fee, Sky Sports has reported.

It was announced last week that Holtby would be moving to White Hart Lane when his contract with the Bundesliga club expires in the summer, but the move could happen six months early if the two sides can come to terms on the player’s valuation. Sky Sports claim Schalke would be willing to accept £1.6m for the Germany international.

The transfer may also depend on timing, as Schalke’s managing director added the club would need the opportunity to find an alternative to the 22-year-old.

Horst Heldt said: “If Tottenham ask for Holtby in the January window, we will talk to them about it. Nothing has happened yet, but, from our point of view, we are prepared to speak to them. It would have to be done quickly, because we would have to find a replacement for him.

Holtby began his professional career at Alemannia Aachen, playing almost 40 games before moving to Schalke in 2009. Holtby spent time on loan at Bochum and Mainz before establishing himself in Gelsenkirchen, thus far playing almost 100 games for the club. Holtby, who has a handful of caps for the senior Germany team, was eligible to play for England through his father, a Liverpool-born soldier stationed in Monchengladbach.
