Man Utd and Tottenham continue row over Fryers
The row between Premier League rivals Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur over Spurs’ signing of former United youngster Zeki Fryers shows no sign of abating, with Sir Alex Ferguson’s club claiming they turned down an offer of £5m for the player who recently joined Tottenham from Standard Liege for substantially less, the Daily Mirror has reported.
Fryers spent six months in Belgium after turning down United’s offer of a new contract, and was the subject of interest from White Hart Lane last summer until Tottenham baulked at paying the compensation demanded by United, the Manchester club have alleged.
The Mirror adds that United are understood to have offered Fryers a new contract worth £1,500 per week, only for the defender to reject the terms and leave on a free transfer. Spurs then signed the 20-year-old shortly after the transfer window opened for a fee that is officially undisclosed, but thought to be less than the amount United were holding out for in the summer.
Ferguson has called for the Premier League to investigate the deal, believing it to be a “blatant manipulation of the rules”. Fryers made six appearances for United, including two as a substitute in the league, with his only starts coming in the League Cup against Leeds United and Aldershot Town last season.
