Arsenal are to offer Theo Walcott a contract worth £25m in an effort to bring an end to the impasse between the club and player before the end of the season, when the England international would be able to leave the Gunners on a free transfer, the Daily Mail has reported.

Walcott is to be tempted with the promise of £88,000 per week in wages and a signing on fee of £3m, with the contract to run for five years. The North London club are said to be confident that the latest move in the stand-off between the two camps will be enough to end the uncertainty around Walcott and tie down the player for the long-term.

With a number of Premier League clubs interested in the outcome of the latest round of negotiations between Arsenal and Walcott, Arsenal’s decision to push ahead with extending the forward’s contract is significant, the Mail adds, after a previous breakdown in communication between the player and the club.

Manager Arsene Wenger has however been so impressed by Walcott’s recent form that the club have altered their approach to the negotiation. Walcott’s continued professionalism during the talks is also said to have won favour with Wenger, as Walcott has become Arsenal’s leading goal scorer while the contract talks have rumbled on in the background.

Walcott has 14 goals to his name this season, the most he has scored in a single term with five months of the campaign still to play. In the league, with eight goals in 15 games, Walcott has scored at a rate better than a goal a game.
