Tottenham enter race for Belhanda transfer

Tottenham Hotspur are to battle it out with Turkish side Fenerbahce for the signature of Montpellier midfielder Younes Belhanda after the French club confirmed the player can leave in the transfer window, the Guardian has reported.

Younes Belhanda

Spurs first expressed an interest in Belhanda in the summer, the newspaper adds, and are understood to have retained their admiration for the Morocco international. Belhanda is part of the Morocco squad to play at the Africa Cup of Nations in South Africa.

Fenerbahce have made an offer for the versatile 22-year-old, thought to be in the region of £6m up front and further payments coming in add-ons, but the Montpellier president, Louis Nicollin, insisted that Fener’s offer fell short of his valuation of the player.

I will let him leave, and I think he wants to leave as well,” Nicollin said. “If they rise to €15m, everything will go through,” he added, with the Guardian claiming the Ligue 1 club are likely to be open to compromise at a lower figure.

Belhanda has a year-and-a-half remaining on his contract and was part of the Montpellier side that won a surprise Ligue 1 title last season. If he does make the move to North London he will find himself a rival of a former teammate, with Olivier Giroud, the ex-Montpellier striker, now plying his trade at Tottenham’s rivals Arsenal.
