Liverpool captain Gerrard targets increased goal return

Steven Gerrard feels he has overcome the inconsistency of earlier this season, with the Liverpool captain believing that if he can start scoring more goals critics will stop suggesting the England skipper has seen better days, the Daily Telegraph has reported.

Steven Gerrard with Brendan Rodgers

Gerrard, 32, has this season won his 100th England cap and played his 600th game for Liverpool but feels the campaign has been a mixed bag, because of the form of the club and his own personal contribution.

Liverpool have struggled for consistency in the first season of Brendan Rodgers’ tenure at Anfield, finding themselves currently eighth in the Premier League table, seven points adrift of a place in the top four and five points short of near neighbours Everton.

Gerrard however feels Liverpool are improving under Rodgers and is optimistic that the Reds can end the season in strong form. Nevertheless, Gerrard has identified one specific area of his own game he wishes to improve.

I’m not happy with my goal tally at the moment,” Gerrard said. “People’s opinions, perceptions and the way they judge you changes when you get a goal.

I think my performances are getting closer to where I want them to be so if I can add goals to those performances then maybe people will start saying the old Steven Gerrard is back.
