Argentine striker Carlos Tevez has revealed that Roberto Mancini’s recent comments about Robin van Persie have spurred on Manchester City’s strikers to start scoring again.

Sky Sports reports that Tevez has been inspired by what his Italian boss said about Manchester United’s red-hot striker van Persie, claiming he could be the vital difference between the two Manchester clubs in this season’s title battle.

Tevez said: “These words were a motivation for the strikers. We know that we need to carry on fighting. United lost some games last season and we were back on track, so we will keep doing our job.

There’s a long way to go and a lot of games to play. The emotion of the Premier League means it’s always a fight to the end. If United lose one game, we’ll be getting close to them. They will know that.

The 28-year-old has had a chequered time at Eastlands but scored his first goal for over a month with a free-kick in Saturday’s routine FA Cup win over Watford.

City’s front line - including Tevez, Mario Balotelli, Edin Dzeko and the injured Sergio Aguero - will need to be firing on all cylinders this weekend, as they face a real test of their title credentials away at Arsenal on Sunday.

With the team scoring 10 goals in their last three matches in all competitions the champions’ goal scoring prowess may be returning after they netted 93 league goals last season, four more than near neighbours United.
