Chelsea still in League Cup tie, insists Cahill

Gary Cahill has refused to rule out any chance of Chelsea overturning the two-goal deficit from their Capital One Cup first leg defeat by Premier League rivals Swansea City, Sky Sports has reported.

Swansea capitalised on two mistakes by Cahill’s centre-back partner Branislav Ivanovic, Michu netting the first goal of the game before half-time and Danny Graham wrapping up the win not long before the final whistle. Chelsea, meanwhile, had a Demba Ba goal disallowed and saw the striker booked for a dive after a collision with Gerhard Tremmel, the Swansea goalkeeper.

Cahill however felt that if the mistakes by Ivanovic had never happened and Chelsea had scored the goals their play deserved, they would have gone in at the interval in a commanding position, adding that the team will look to draw on that when they play the return fixture in south Wales. He said: “It is never over. We created enough chances to go in at half-time three-nil or four-nil up. And if we take those chances in the away leg and keep it tight, we will win.

The former Bolton Wanderers defender also believes the experience of last season, when Chelsea had to come from behind in the second leg against Napoli to keep their Champions League dream alive will serve the side well.

We showed we can turn it round when we did it against Napoli in the Champions League last season, so this team can do it - and we need to,” Cahill said.

I think if we had taken our chances we would have won convincingly and there is no doubt we can create chances there.
