Raheem Sterling has spoken of the support he has received from Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard after breaking into the Reds first team this season under Brendan Rodgers, the Daily Mail has reported.

Sterling, 18, has established himself under new manager Rodgers, playing 29 times this season after making only three appearances as a substitute in the last campaign under Rodgers’ predecessor Kenny Dalglish.

And Sterling has thanked Gerrard for helping him grow into life as a Liverpool first team player - and for effectively being his enforcer on the pitch.

Sterling said of Gerrard: “He has been brilliant for me. He's always looking after me, always checking to see if I'm alright. I've noticed as well that if anyone touches me on the pitch, he'll always get them straight back with a tackle. He's always looking after me, on the pitch, off the pitch.

The former Queens Park Rangers youngster added that Gerrard has watched over him ever since he first moved to Anfield - Sterling left Loftus Road in 2010 - to the point that Gerrard offered Sterling advice on where in Merseyside to set up home.

Sterling’s progression has seen him not only become one of the first names on the teamsheet of manager Rodgers but also break into the England set-up under for Liverpool boss Roy Hodgson. Sterling, who was born in Jamaica and is still eligible to play for the Caribbean side, played 84 minutes of the match in Stockholm.
