Newcastle desperate to keep Coloccini

Saturday 12 January 2013

Newcastle United will do whatever it takes to keep their homesick captain Fabricio Coloccini at the club as the Magpies attempt to keep all hands on deck for their fight against relegation from the Premier League, the Daily Mirror has reported.

Fabricio Coloccini

Manager Alan Pardew has already lost top scorer Demba Ba during the current transfer window, Chelsea swooping for the Senegalese forward by exploiting the buyout clause in Ba’s contract, while Coloccini is said to want to break the contract he signed only last summer and return to Argentina.

Coloccini’s wife is understood to be ill, which has spurred the centre-back’s desire to move back home. San Lorenzo, Coloccini’s local club, would then pick up the former Milan player’s services.

A meeting is to be held between Coloccini, his agents, Newcastle owner Mike Ashley and the club’s managing director, Derek Llambias, in an effort to work out a solution that is best for all concerned.

The Mirror suggests that while Newcastle would be loath to lose Coloccini considering their precarious league position - only two points above the bottom three - compassionate grounds mean they may have their hand forced.

San Lorenzo would not be able to afford Coloccini’s asking price, however, so Newcastle would have to consent to releasing the captain.

Coloccini has been a Newcastle player since 2008, moving from Spanish side Deportivo La Coruna for a fee of £10m. The 30-year-old briefly played for San Lorenzo in the 2000/01 season, on loan from Milan.
