Liverpool up interest in Sneijder

Liverpool are upping their efforts to bring coveted midfielder Wesley Sneijder to Anfield, reports the Daily Star.

Wesley Sneijder

The Inter Milan star has been the subject of much speculation in recent months, and has appeared to be on the verge of a move to Turkey, with Galatasaray leading the chase for his signature.

However, the Dutchman has admitted in the past how much interest he would hold in a move to the Premier League, and has strongly been linked with both Manchester clubs in recent transfer windows.

Liverpool today face old rivals Manchester United, who appeared to be on the verge of signing Sneijder two years ago before the player’s wage demands proved too much for the Red Devils’ liking, particularly on top of the high transfer fee involved at the time.

Liverpool’s interest at present appears to be the strongest from the Premier League, though the Daily Star speculates that wages could still prove the make-or-break factor.

Sneijder’s contract at the Nerazzurri runs for another two years, but the 28-year-old, who has been capped 90 times by his native Netherlands, has been asked to take a salary cut in order to help the financial situation at the San Siro. His refusal to do so has led the club to make the decision to offload, with the Premier League now on red alert.

The Mirror reports that Sneijder is stalling on his move to Galatasaray, and his preferred destination is the Premier League. Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers remains optimistic that he can land a real coup in capturing Sneijder “relatively cheaply”, and the prospect of pairing him with captain Steven Gerrard in the middle of the park could give Liverpool a real sense of optimism moving into the second half of the season.
