Man City boss Mancini promises to appeal Kompany red card
Roberto Mancini has insisted Manchester City will appeal the red card shown to captain Vincent Kompany in the 2-0 win over Arsenal on Sunday, claiming referee Mike Dean was completely wrong to dismiss the centre-back, the Daily Mirror has reported.
Kompany was shown a straight red card for a 76th minute challenge on Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere, but Mancini was adamant that not only should the Belgian not have been sent off, but that Kompany should not even have had a free-kick given against him.
Faced with the prospect of losing Kompany to a three-game ban for violent conduct, Mancini said: “It was not a foul. I didn’t see it from the bench but I’ve seen it now. Now I will appeal because it’s impossible to lose a player for three games for nothing. It’s not a red card. It’s nothing.”
The Mirror adds that Mancini is already without Kolo and Yaya Toure, are is with the Ivory Coast national team on Africa Cup of Nations duty, while against the Gunners Mancini was missing Sergio Aguero, Samir Nasri, Maicon, Jack Rodwell and Micah Richards through injury.
City nevertheless won the match 2-0 after Arsenal had Laurent Koscielny sent off within 10 minutes for bringing down Edin Dzeko, with the resultant penalty missed. However, James Milner and Dzeko were soon on the score sheet with Arsenal unable to find a reply.
