Wenger criticises Arsenal attitude after Man City defeat

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has criticised the attitude of his players after the Gunners were beaten at home by Premier League champions Manchester City, the Daily Mirror has reported.

City recorded a 2-0 victory at the Emirates Stadium through goals from Edin Dzeko and James Milner, with Dzeko also missing a penalty, awarded after Laurent Koscielny was sent off for bringing down the striker early in the match. City also saw a centre-back sent off, with Vincent Kompany dismissed in the second-half for a tackle on Jack Wilshere.

Wenger however felt his Arsenal players started the match with the wrong mindset, feeling the side was too reticent to deal with the challenge posed by Roberto Mancini’s team. Wenger added it was this shyness that allowed City to push forward early in the contest, with the end result being Koscielny’s red card.

Overall we started too timid, with not enough authority in a game like that, and allowed them to dictate,” Wenger said. “We paid very early from that. We didn’t start with enough confidence or authority. You have to dictate your personality, especially defensively. After that, we played 80 minutes with 10 against 11 against a good team, and it’s difficult.

The defeat leaves Arsenal in sixth position in the Premier League, three points behind Everton and six adrift of Tottenham Hotspur, who hold the final Champions League qualification place. Arsenal though have a game in hand on the two teams directly above them.
