Rodgers bemoans lack of depth in Liverpool squad after Man Utd defeat

Brendan Rodgers has said he does not believe the Premier League table shows a true reflection of the disparity between Liverpool and Manchester United, with the Daily Mirror reporting Rodgers as crediting the lack of depth in the Reds’ squad as the real difference between the two sides.

United beat Liverpool 2-1 at Old Trafford on Sunday to establish a 24-point lead over their rivals from Merseyside, having been victorious at Anfield by the same scoreline earlier in the season.

Goals from Robin van Persie and Nemanja Vidic gave United a two-goal lead with Daniel Sturridge pulling a goal back for Liverpool, netting his first league goal for Rodgers’ side in his first league appearance since moving to the club from Chelsea.

Rodgers however felt that there was enough on show to suggest Liverpool are closer to United than the league table would indicate, claiming that given time to re-build the Liverpool squad, he will close the gap between the two teams.

We’re 24 points behind United now. But we’re not 24 points behind in terms of quality. The points difference is due to the squad,” Rodgers said.

He added: “That’s the difference for us, the depth of the squad. Once we close the gap in the squad in the coming transfer windows, I’ve got great faith in the fact that we’ll be able to challenge.
