Danny Welbeck believes Manchester United’s willingness to work hard was what ensured their 2-1 win over Liverpool in the Premier League, Sky Sports has reported.

Welbeck was named the broadcaster’s man of the match for his performance alongside Robin van Persie, with Welbeck unable to get on the score sheet but playing a part in creating the opening goal for his Dutch teammate.

Nemanja Vidic later added a second goal to give United a 2-0 lead but Daniel Sturridge, a half-time Liverpool substitute, scored his first league goal for the club - on his league debut - to put Brendan Rodgers’ side back in the contest.

United however held on to the advantage to record a second victory of the season over Liverpool and maintain their seven point lead over Manchester City at the top of the table. The gap was briefly extended to 10 points by virtue of United’s win but City pulled United back by beating Arsenal.

Welbeck said: “We had our game plan set up and I think it worked really well. It was a good team performance and I thought we dug in really well. Obviously I've got to work hard in the game and once I get my chance on the pitch, I've got to show what I can do and make the best of it.
