Jose Mourinho has labelled Real Madrid’s meeting with Manchester United in the last 16 of the Champions League as “the match the world wants to see”, according to the Daily Mirror.

Mourinho lamented the fact that this clash of the titans is not the final of the tournament, but insisted that this will not take away from the glamour of two of Europe’s top teams sharing the playing field. He said: “This is the match the world wants to see. Real Madrid against Manchester United. Sir Alex against his friend Mourinho.

"The only shame is that it is not the final. We know we can beat them. We know they can beat us - but we will be ready. There were groups where you knew who was going to be first and second after two or three games.

"But our group included three of the best five teams in the competition - Borussia Dortmund, Manchester City and ourselves. Now we get the toughest opponent in the biggest tie of the last 16."

The former Chelsea manager was spotted at Old Trafford taking notes during United’s 2-1 victory over long-time rivals Liverpool on Sunday.

The Champions League fixture, which takes place at the Santiago Bernabeu on February 13 will also mark the first time former Red Devil Cristiano Ronaldo has played against his old club. The 27-year-old spent six trophy-laden years at Old Trafford before departing for current La Liga champions Real in 2009.

Old Trafford will host the return leg between the sides on March 5.
