Liverpool can learn from Man Utd, says Downing

Liverpool winger Stewart Downing has said that the Reds can learn from the Red Devils - or more precisely, from Manchester United’s ability to grind out results even when they are not playing at the top of their game, the Daily Mirror has reported.

United saw off the challenge of Liverpool at Old Trafford on Sunday, goals from Robin van Persie and Nemanja Vidic proving enough to beat Brendan Rodgers’ side, with Daniel Sturridge scoring on his league debut in reply after entering the match as a half-time substitute.

The home side were on top for the first 45 minutes but after the break, following the introduction of Sturridge to partner Luis Suarez and a change in Liverpool’s formation, the match was much more competitive, with Liverpool arguably shading the second-half.

Downing however feels that merely underlines the strength of United, as Sir Alex Ferguson’s charges were able to hold out for victory despite not playing to their full potential in the face of an improved Liverpool performance.

And that, Downing added, is something from which Liverpool can learn. He said: “ I just think it’s about consistency. When Manchester United don’t play well, they will win. They struggled in the second half, yet they won the game.

That’s what we can learn. Being hard to beat when we are not at our best. When we do play well, we murder teams. But when we don’t play well, we don’t exactly get results. That is probably a learning thing for us.
