QPR in line to beat Newcastle to Remy signing

Loic Remy is expected to turn down the chance to join the French enclave at Newcastle United in favour of trying to keep Queens Park Rangers in the Premier League, the Daily Mirror has reported.

Newcastle had agreed a fee in the region of £10m with Remy’s club Marseille only for QPR to trump the Magpies with an offer of their own that, as it stands, looks to have appealed more to the striker.

Rangers are said to have offered Remy a weekly wage of £70,000, more than Newcastle were willing to put on the table, and the R’s have included a contract clause that would allow Remy to leave should the Loftus Road side be relegated.

QPR are currently bottom of the league, five points adrift of safety, although life for Newcastle is little happier - Alan Pardew’s side are only two places and as many points above the drop zone.

Remy is expected to speak with compatriot Yohan Cabaye, the Newcastle midfielder, before making his final decision on where his future lies.

Jose Anigo, the Marseille sporting director, told French television: “ We reached an agreement with Newcastle, but we also talked with other English clubs. QPR have deep pockets and a manager (Harry Redknapp) known in England to have a good reputation, so I do not think Loic has closed the door on QPR.
