Strachan to become new Scotland manager

Tuesday 15 January 2013

Former Manchester United and Leeds midfielder - and Coventry City, Southampton, Celtic and Middlesbrough manager - Gordon Strachan is expected to be named as the new manager of the Scotland national team, the Daily Mirror has reported.

Strachan would succeed Craig Levein, who was removed from the position in November after a series of disappointing results left Scotland’s World Cup qualification hopes looking uncertain.

A Press Association report claimed that Strachan could be appointed as early as Tuesday, providing the loose ends on the proposed contract between the 55-year-old and the Scottish Football Association can be tied up in time.

Strachan is expected to name former Leeds teammate Gary McAllister as his assistant, with the pair’s first game in charge coming in early February when Scotland meet Estonia at Aberdeen’s Pittodrie ground.

Scotland’s first competitive match under Strachan would follow in late March, at home to Wales at Hampden Park on March 22 and then a trip to Serbia on March 26.

Scotland are currently bottom of World Cup qualification Group A with two points from their opening four games. As well as Wales and Serbia, Scotland have to contend with Macedonia, Croatia and group leaders Belgium.
