No Liverpool trial for Forren as Southampton swoop
Southampton have reportedly secured the signing of Norwegian centre-back Vegard Forren, the Daily Mirror has reported.
The news that Forren's club Molde and the Saints have agreed to a transfer is likely to ruffle feathers on Merseyside, with Liverpool apparently expecting the 24-year-old to begin a trial in the next few days. However, Molde manager, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, has said that he expects Forren to make the move to the South coast club instead.
Solskjaer commented: “There have been many inquiries from various English clubs, but Southampton submitted an offer, it was interesting for us and Vegard. We are more or less agreed with the club, but nothing is 100 per cent.”
The Saints are struggling in their return to the Premier League, currently sitting 14th, just two points above the drop zone. Forren, who has played 146 times for Molde and has earned five caps for the Norwegian national team, would join a Southampton's defence that has kept just three clean sheets all season.
Forren may have Claus Lundekvam to thank for this move, with the former Saints player saying he has sung the praises of his compatriot. “I got a call from Southampton about a month before Christmas and I highly recommended him.
“Southampton have been looking for a top-class defender for a long time, and Forren is a type that fits in with the way they play.”
Forren was due to start a trial at Liverpool's training ground, Melwood, this week, with Norwegian television station TV2 reporting that Molde had accepted an offer from Liverpool for Forren's services.
