Hummels, Shawcross and Subotic said to be on Man City shortlist

Manchester City have got their sights set on Borussia Dortmund's pair of defenders, Neven Subotic and Mats Hummels, the Daily Mirror has reported.

Mats Hummels playing for Germany

Roberto Mancini's men are facing three games without their captain, Vincent Kompany, who was sent off in Sunday's 2-0 win over Arsenal. While City are preparing an appeal against the decision, Mancini is reportedly lining up the duo in case he loses his first-choice centre-back for some crucial games in January.

Subotic and Hummels have been ever-presents in Dortmund's side this season, which sees the German side currently sitting third in the Bundesliga and into the knockout stages of the Champions League. Subotic, a Serbian international with four caps, and Hummels, who has earned 14 caps for the German national team, are amongst a host of players currently being linked with City, who are pushing for back-to-back championships.

However, City may face a tough battle in luring the pair away from Signal Iduna Park, as the German side are amongst the favourites for the Champions League this season, a competition in which City are no longer involved. With a tie against Shakhtar Donetsk coming up in February in the Champions League and the German club riding high in the Bundesliga, Dortmund would be keen to hold on to the pair, who have been key figures in their defensive line-up.

City have also been linked with a £10m offer for Stoke City’s Ryan Shawcross, with the English centre-back winning the admiration of several managers for a standout season so far. However, Shawcross, who earned his first England call-up this season, recently signed a contract extension.
