Germany want England friendly

Tuesday 15 January 2013

Euro 2012 semi-finalists Germany have indicated that they would like to play a friendly with England later in the year.

Germany manager Joachim Low

ITV reports that general manager and Euro 96 golden goal hero Oliver Bierhoff is aiming at a November date with Roy Hodgson’s Three Lions in the build-up to the 2014 World Cup.

Bierhoff said: “I’m delighted that we are going to be facing top nations again in our warm-up matches.

France is just the beginning. In August, we are looking to play Brazil, and should we qualify directly for the 2014 World Cup, then we intend to play England and Italy in November.

In an interview with the German Football Association, Bierhoff also revealed plans for the national squad to have a training camp in the United States once the Bundesliga season concludes.

Should there be a match between two of the great rivals of international football, it will be the first game since England’s Bloemfontein debacle in the 2010 World Cup, where they crashed to a 4-1 defeat.

England will have happy memories of their last friendly with Germany. Goals from Matthew Upson and John Terry gave Fabio Capello’s side a 2-1 victory in Berlin in 2008.

As part of the FA 150th anniversary celebrations, England will also play friendlies later in the year against Scotland and the Republic of Ireland.
