Newcastle chasing Ajax midfielder de Jong

Newcastle are hoping to showcase their ambitions and help inspire a turnaround in their ailing form this season by tabling an offer in the region of £9m for Ajax playmaker Siem de Jong, reports the Daily Mail.

Alan Pardew

The 23-year-old, who netted three Champions League goals in two games against Manchester City earlier this season, has two years remaining on his contract at the Amsterdam Arena and reportedly is eager to run this down and leave the club on a free transfer in 2015.

Magpies boss Alan Pardew has other ideas, however, and hopes to convince the Lancieri club captain that now would be a great time to move to the North East and help spark a revolution at St. James’ Park.

Pardew’s goal is to push to a Champions League spot next season, but is aware that in the short-term the prospect of a relegation battle looms large. Plans for survival include linking de Jong with French midfielder Yohan Cabaye.

The Magpies face stiff competition for de Jong’s services however, with the Bundesliga also reportedly heavily interested. De Jong’s younger brother Luuk is already based there, currently plying his trade for Borussia Monchengladbach.

De Jong has scored 64 goals in 196 appearances for Ajax.
