West Ham trying to tie up Diame contract amid Arsenal interest

Mohamed Diame’s future at West Ham remains uncertain despite ongoing contract talks, according to the Daily Mail.

Mohamed Diame

The former Wigan Athletic midfielder’s impressive displays have been attracting interest from around the Premier League, and it is thought that this interest is holding up talks between player and club regarding a new contract.

Negotiations are believed to be ongoing, and these were confirmed by Hammers co-chairman David Gold last month. Gold does not believe that the club will lose Diame amid interest from clubs such as Chelsea and Arsenal among others. He said: “We are talking to the player and are improving his deal. I would be very confident that he will remain our player.

I believe at this stage this will be nothing more than agent talk ahead of the transfer window opening. We are talking to Mo and his agent and I am quite confident he will still be our player at the end of January.

Another primary reason for such contract discussions is the fact that the 25-year-old’s current deal includes a £3.5m release clause, which was included upon the player’s move from the Latics in 2012.

Despite the reported interest and relatively low release clause, no firm offers have yet been made for the Senegal international, though interim Chelsea boss Rafael Benitez and Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger are both long-time admirers of the player. Fulham and Everton are also thought to be monitoring his situation.

With Mikel Arteta’s injury before Arsenal’s defeat to Manchester City on Sunday, it is thought that Wenger may be preparing a move for Diame as soon as this week. Hammers boss Sam Allardyce has been impressed with Diame’s contribution since his summer arrival, and is eager to keep the player at the Boleyn Ground.

So far, Diame has scored two goals in 16 appearances for West Ham.
