Wenger struggling to find players to improve Arsenal squad

Arsene Wenger has said that while he is keen to strengthen his Arsenal squad during the on-going transfer window, he is having a problem finding players who are good enough to improve upon what the Gunners already have, the Daily Mirror has reported.

Wenger has yet to make a signing in January, despite admitting he is scouring the market for potential additions. The manager has also confirmed that he has a substantial transfer kitty to work with, the newspaper claims, but Wenger believes that the players he already has available are of a high standard and improving on them is easier said than done - something he acknowledges may be a minority opinion.

It has become more difficult for one simple reason: We have a good squad. I know we swim against the stream a bit because people don't believe that. I say we have a very good squad,” Wenger said.

He went on: “We have some improvements to make and we know exactly where. In January it is difficult to find the players that are really better and can give something special to the squad. The number is right. We have a good balance. We are working very hard to find what we want.

Wenger added that the club’s first priority is to agree a new contract with Theo Walcott, which the Frenchman says is very close to happening, while Wenger also wants to get his injured players back to full fitness. Then, the 63-year-old said, the focus will shift to new signings.

Arsenal are currently sixth in the Premier League, six points off Tottenham Hotspur in the struggle to finish fourth, and 21 points adrift of table-topping Manchester United. Arsenal also face an FA Cup replay at home to Swansea City on Wednesday evening.
