Benitez believes he has Chelsea backing

Interim Chelsea manager Rafael Benitez believes he does have the backing of the club’s supporters despite sections of crowd not yet warming to the Spaniard after he replaced Roberto Di Matteo in the Stamford Bridge hot seat, the Daily Mail has reported.

There has been a trend for Chelsea fans to chant the name of Di Matteo in the 16th minute of a match, representing the No. 16 shirt worn by Di Matteo during his time as a player for Chelsea, while the goals scored by Swansea City in last week’s Capital One Cup semi-final first leg were met with vehement criticism of Benitez and support for his sacked Italian predecessor.

Benitez however feels that since he and the supporters want the same thing for Chelsea - for the club to win matches and trophies - then ultimately they are pulling in the same direction and the supporters’ attitude will eventually reflect that.

He said: “All the fans, everyone around, want to win. Some of them maybe will show more or less passion. But every proper fan will want their team to win. Anyone who’s a fan of a club wants their team to win. They’ll enjoy us carrying on winning and doing well. That’s my feeling.

Chelsea are currently third in the Premier League, seven points behind second-placed Manchester City and 14 adrift of table-topping Manchester United, but the London club have a game in hand on their Manchester rivals, to be played against Southampton on Wednesday evening at Stamford Bridge.
