Milan rival Manchester United and City in Mourinho pursuit

Manchester City and Manchester United face competition from Milan in their attempt to secure the services of Jose Mourinho, the Daily Mail has reported.

Jose Mourinho

It is widely expected that Mourinho, currently in charge at Real Madrid, will leave his post in the summer, meaning a number of big name clubs are preparing offers for the Portuguese manager, with City and United amongst the front runners. However, Milan have emerged as a potential destination for Mourinho, with club president Silvio Berlusconi switching his focus to Mourinho after a failed attempt to lure Pep Guardiola to the San Siro.

Mourinho was at Old Trafford on Sunday to watch United beat Liverpool in the Premier League, most likely to observe his future opponents in the Champions League knockout tie, where United and Real Madrid will square off.

However, with Sir Alex Ferguson expected to retire sometime in the next few seasons, Mourinho has emerged as a potential successor to the Scot, having admitted his desire to one day take the helm at Old Trafford.

City, who have been eliminated already from the Champions League and currently find themselves seven points behind United in the league, may opt for a different manager than current boss Roberto Mancini if they fail to secure silverware this season.

Chelsea have also been linked with Mourinho, who was manager of the London club for three seasons and lead them to two Premier League titles. However, with club owner Roman Abramovich having previously sacked Mourinho after an apparent clash of ideas, the prospect of a return to Stamford Bridge seems unlikely.

Berlusconi has been making several remarks of recent about trying to re-establish Milan as a powerhouse of European football, and the signing of Mourinho would certainly add to that claim. The Italian giants are currently seventh in Serie A, some 14 points behind league leaders Juventus.

Real Madrid currently find themselves in third place and a massive 18 points behind runaway leaders Barcelona in Spain, leading to speculation that Mourinho would not continue in the summer, despite having led the Madrid club to the title last season.
