Pardew warns Newcastle face season-defining two weeks

Newcastle United manager Alan Pardew believes the final two weeks of the transfer window will decide if his team remains in the Premier League or faces a second relegation in four years, the Daily Mirror has reported.

The Magpies dropped out of the top flight at the end of the 2008/09 season and although they made an immediate return, storming to automatic promotion from the Championship at the first attempt and broke into the Premier League’s top five last season, the current campaign has been an altogether unhappier one for Pardew’s team.

Newcastle are currently two places and as many points clear of danger and this week missed out on the signing of Loic Remy, who joined Queens Park Rangers instead after the R’s trumped Newcastle’s offer. Having lost Demba Ba to Chelsea at the start of the transfer window, Pardew is in a desperate search for re-enforcements, with only right-back Mathieu Debuchy joining so far.

Pardew said: “We won’t make knee-jerk reactions, but need a player or two to make sure we keep our Premier League status. I’m only going on the fact that some of the teams I’ve put out in my opinion haven’t been strong enough for Newcastle. That’s been caused by an injury crisis.

It has put the squad under pressure, and we can’t take a risk. We shouldn’t be lost to the fact that we could be relegated. I’m not going to lose that. I’m experienced enough to know that’s an important message, for our fans too
