Keane expects Rooney to have taken his last Man Utd penalty
Sir Alex Ferguson will take Wayne Rooney off penalty duty for Manchester United after the England striker missed a spot kick against West Ham United in the midweek FA Cup replay, former United captain Roy Keane has told the Daily Mirror.
Keane added that Ferguson will be angry at Rooney’s errant effort from 12 yards, the 10th time the former Everton forward has missed in 27 attempts. Rooney sent the penalty over the crossbar, with Ferguson unable to contain his unhappiness on the touchline, the newspaper noted.
The match ended in a 1-0 victory for the United, the same scoreline as when Rooney stepped up, but the 27-year-old’s miss could have proved costly if the Hammers had found a way back into the tie, potentially forcing extra-time and putting more strain on United’s players, or even dumping United out of the competition.
“[Ferguson] will be fuming. I think that will be the last penalty Rooney takes for United,” Keane said. “He could have made things a lot easier. The last thing the manager would have wanted was for the game to go to extra-time.
“Wayne has missed 10 now and that is far too many. Clearly he is not up to it in terms of taking penalties. Van Persie I'm sure will be delighted to take over that role.”
Keane was the United captain the last time the FA Cup went to Old Trafford, in 2004. The ex-Republic of Ireland international skippered the side to a 3-0 victory over Championship side Millwall, the match won through goals from Cristiano Ronaldo and a Ruud van Nistelrooy brace - the first of which was a penalty.
