Arsenal boss Wenger warns Diaby over injuries

Arsene Wenger has hinted that time is running out for Arsenal midfielder Abou Diaby to prove he can cope with the physical demands of playing in the Premier League, the Daily Mirror has reported.

Abou Diaby

Diaby has recently returned from another extended injury lay-off, missing more than three months between being substituted in the 17th minute against Chelsea in late September to his return to action against Manchester City earlier in January.

Before his last spell on the sidelines Diaby had featured on a regular basis for the Gunners in the early weeks of the season - and won a place in the France set-up as well - but last season was almost a total washout for the 26-year-old, who made only five appearances, none of which came before November.

Diaby’s injury problems can be traced back to a broken leg suffered at Sunderland nearly seven years ago, the Mirror adds, an injury so severe it nearly ended the player’s career. With 18 months remaining on his contract, however, Wenger has publically admitted Diaby’s Arsenal future is up in the air.

Wenger added: “It is a big period for him. He is conscious of it. He does everything, but you do not want to put any pressure on him because he has enough. He puts himself under so much pressure.

The manager also spoke of Diaby’s professional approach to his fitness and the mental strength he has shown to continually come back from injuries that would have ended the careers of less strong-minded people.
