Adkins learnt of Southampton fate from watching TV

Nigel Adkins learnt he was to be sacked by Southampton from watching television, with a report broadcasting the news screened shortly before he met with Saints chairman Nicola Cortese, the Daily Mirror has reported.

Cortese duly sacked Adkins, who leaves Southampton in 15th place in the Premier League, three points and as many places clear of the relegation zone. The former Scunthorpe United manager had taken over at the south coast club when they were a League One side, delivering two promotions in his tenure to return Southampton to the top flight.

Adkins has been replaced by former Espanyol Coach Mauricio Pochettino, with the Mirror claiming that the Argentine has work to do to win over Southampton’s players, many of whom are loyal to Adkins and had recently worked to improve their form to try and keep Adkins in a job after rumours earlier in the season that his days were numbered.

The Mirror adds that Cortese had previously contacted former Chelsea manager Roberto Di Matteo with a view to appointing the Italian in Adkins’ place, and that Pochettino was offered the job at Southampton days before Adkins was sacked, and prior to the 2-2 draw with Chelsea at Stamford Bridge earlier this week.
