Man Utd boss Ferguson wants action over diving
Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has called for Premier League clubs to take more responsibility for punishing their players who are seen to dive, the Daily Mirror has reported.
Ferguson revealed that the subject was discussed at a League Managers Association meeting this week and that his personal view was that the Football Association was in a difficult position as to the practicality of punishing players who dive.
The Scot questioned how the FA could prove a player had intentionally gone to ground in an effort to win a decision for his team when he had not been touched, suggesting that it would open a legal minefield for the governing body.
Ferguson’s solution was that the clubs should take action against their own players, as he has done in the past when a couple of United players drew criticism for their behaviour. Ferguson added: “You have to [warn players if they dive]. I’ve done it with Cristiano [Ronaldo]. He was only a young boy, 18, when he came here and it took him maybe a couple of years to understand that. But after that he was fine.”
Luis Suarez last week admitted to diving in an attempt to win a penalty for Liverpool against Stoke City earlier in the season, leading Reds manager Brendan Rodgers to condemn his own player and vow to punish the Uruguayan internally.
