Barcelona up interest in Liverpool stopper Reina

Spanish giants Barcelona are lining up a move for Liverpool goalkeeper Pepe Reina, according to The Mail Online.

Pepe Reina

The present incumbent in the number 1 jersey at the Catalan club, Victor Valdes, announced last week that he would not be renewing his contract at Camp Nou, and as a result the club have begun their search for his replacement, and have set the 30-year-old at the top of their list.

Valdes’ present deal expires in 2014, and while this means he is likely to remain at the club for another 18 months or so Barca are keen to bring their new man in this summer. With Kop boss Brendan Rodgers aware that he may have to sell some of his top players in order to finance the reshaping of his squad, the Spaniards believe they may well have a chance of having a bid accepted.

Reina is also considered a top candidate for the role owing to the fact that he was brought up through the club’s own youth system, alongside Valdes. The player, who is in his eighth year at Anfield, has 26 international caps with Spain to his name as well as one appearance for Catalonia.
