Ferguson hits out at assistant referee after Man Utd draw with Tottenham
Sir Alex Ferguson has criticised one of the assistant referees during Manchester United’s draw with Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League on Sunday, the Daily Mirror has reported.
Ferguson felt that the performance of Simon Beck was sub-standard after Beck failed to award United a penalty following a challenge on Wayne Rooney. Ferguson also dredged up an incident from the past when Beck allowed a Didier Drogba goal for Chelsea to stand despite claims of offside from the United defence.
“We should have gone down our side of the pitch, the stand-side linesman didn’t give us a thing all day, Ferguson said. He added: “For me it was a poor performance by him. Why he never saw the penalty kick from Wayne Rooney, some other decisions...we remember him well from his time at the Chelsea game when Drogba was three yards offside and he gave onside.
“He had a shocking game. I’m disappointed in his performance, I really am. He had a bad game and we never got anything on that side of the pitch.”
The Mirror claims Ferguson has risked censure by the Football Association for speaking out of turn about the performance of one of the match officials, with a possible ban in the offing for the long-serving Scot.
United had gone into the lead in the match through a first-half Robin van Persie header only for Tottenham forward Clint Dempsey to score in the 93rd minute of the match, the result seeing United’s lead over Manchester City at the top of the table drop to five points while Tottenham move four points clear of fifth-place Everton, who meet Southampton on Monday evening.
