Platt welcomes return to goals for Man City playmaker Silva

Manchester City assistant manager David Platt has rejected the suggestion that David Silva’s two goals against Fulham mark a return to form for the Spain midfielder, but did admit that he was pleased to see the playmaker on target again, ESPN has reported.

David Silva

Silva scored both goals in City’s 2-0 win over Fulham, a result that coupled with Manchester United’s draw with Tottenham Hotspur sees the gap between the defending league champions and the table-toppers reduced to five points.

The former Valencia player opened the scoring after only two minutes of play, doubling his tally in the second-half shortly after the hour mark. The brace were Silva’s first goals since he scored the opening goal of City’s 5-0 win over Aston Villa in November, previously his only goal of the season so far.

Silva’s shyness in front of goal was not a concern last season when the 27-year-old managed 12 goals for club and country, scoring twice for Spain at Euro 2012 and netting two for his country against Scotland, to go with eight for City in the title-winning campaign.

Platt denied that Silva’s form had slipped of late, insisting that Silva is in the side for reasons other than the scoring of goals, but agreed that Silva’s strikes were timely. He said: “Last year he had a few more goals under his belt but we know how important he is whether he is scoring goals or not.

I think his performances have been right up there. I think it would be harsh to say it has been lacking.

He is in the team for all sorts of different reasons, not just his goalscoring ability. I think his performances of late have deserved goals. I am pleased he got the two and he should have had a third.
