Gerrard targets Champions League to keep Suarez at Liverpool

Monday 21 January 2013

Steven Gerrard has admitted that Liverpool must be playing in the Champions League if they can expect to keep striker Luis Suarez at Anfield, the Daily Mail has reported.

The Reds captain was speaking to Sky Sports’ Goals on Sunday programme in the aftermath of Liverpool’s 5-0 win over Norwich City on Saturday. Both Suarez and Gerrard scored in the match but the skipper feels Brendan Rodgers’ side have to be competing further up the table if they can hold on to the Uruguayan forward.

Gerrard said: “I know he’s signed recently a long-term contract. I know that he’s comfortable and he’s happy here. But I think that’s a question for Luis to answer.

Hopefully we can put a fight on from now until the end of the season to finish fourth, and make the decision for him. But Luis Suarez deserves to be in the Champions League. I think everyone has to admit that.

Liverpool are currently seventh, seven points adrift of Tottenham Hotspur, who sit in fourth, the final place that can provide Champions League qualification.

Jordan Henderson opened the scoring for Liverpool against the Canaries, netting after just short of half-an-hour of play, with Suarez doubling the lead 10 minutes later. After half-time January signing Daniel Sturridge scored his first goal at Anfield after being set-up by Stewart Downing, before Gerrard added a fourth and a Ryan Bennett own goal completed the scoring.
